William Pitt Child Development Center

William Pitt Child Development Center
Stamford, Connecticut

The William Pitt Child Development Center project is the adaptive re-use of a 29,000 square foot board of education building into a child care center for 350 preschoolers in Stamford, Connecticut. The facility also offers adult training programs, health services and counseling. The center was the prototype for state-wide School Readiness Program. The expansive size of the program prompted the design of smaller clusters of classrooms, so as to provide a smaller, more comfortable setting for young children. Each cluster is designed with its own identity of color and shape and is articulated with child-height windows and playful patterns. The project successfully adapted an institutional box-building into a colorful, stimulating environment for early learning.
